Why Protecting Wind Turbines from Lightning is Critical
News by Alltec Corporation
Tuesday December 29, 2009

Exactly when and where lightning will strike is an unpredictable act of nature. If scientists could calculate the exact location of future lightning, the United States would be able to avoid the $2 billion in annual property damage due to this awesome yet terrifying natural phenomenon. However, the fact that lightning usually strikes the highest point is indisputable. Height, shape and isolation are all leading factors in determining the place where lightning will choose to strike. One of the worst possible courses of action during a storm is to stand under a tree; in fact, this is the number one leading cause of death or injury from lightning strikes. Wind turbines act in a similar manner, as they are the tallest point and sustain a high probability of being struck by lightning. Therefore, it is often not a matter of “if” but “when” a wind turbine will be struck by lightning or experiences other types of overvoltages and currents.

Mobile Lightning Protection & Grounding
Lightning-Protection by Alltec Corporation
Tuesday May 15, 2007
Alltec Corporation’s Mobile Lightning Protection and Grounding (MLPG) Systems are designed and manufactured to be employed with metallic masts, towers, and other mobile equipment and temporary structures. Sensitive and expensive electronic sensors, communication antennas, radar, and other rapid deployment devices, require protection from direct lightning strikes, electrostatic, and electromagnetic pulse energy. Alltec Corporation’s MLPG Systems provide charge dissipation terminals and ground electrodes to meet this need. Custom configurations, accessories, and design assistance are available to meet any site description and specification. Call with your application requirements.
Features:
- Created expressly for simple, rapid, and reliable assembly and disassembly.
- MLPG System Charge Dissipation Terminal (CDT) Assemblies may be oriented and adjusted to suit a wide variety of mast mounted equipment, and are available for both offset (side), and straight (top), installation on mobile equipment deployment structures.
- Exclusive charge dissipation features utilizing the Point Discharge Principle for lightning strike mitigation: electrodes break down into corona before streamers can form, thereby lowering accumulated charges and postponing streamer generation. Models are available for both standard and high-risk applications.
- Multiple grounding configurations are available to suit specific cost/performance goals: a robust copper and stainless steel winged ground electrode (shown) for excellent low resistance/impedance earth ground connectivity; stainless steel and copper clad stainless steel electrodes, with steel handles for speedy installation/extraction; and, copper clad stainless steel rods for cost effective multipurpose applications. Custom designs, materials, and exothermically welded connections are available.
- Materials and wire selections to cover every need and application.
- Rugged, wheeled carrying case is optional accessory.
- The entire MLPG System typically requires less than 46” X 12” X 6” stowage space, and weighs less than 30 lbs, supplying portable convenience.
- Requires less than 15 minutes to assemble and install onto typical mobile mast.
- Use with PowerTrip® Transient Voltage Surge Suppression devices for a complete Alltec “Protection Pyramid™”, the Three-Step lightning protection, grounding, and power quality site solution.

Research Partnership
Research-and-Development by Alltec Corporation
Tuesday January 30, 2007
Alltec Corporation and the National Technical University, “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute,” of Ukraine have signed a memorandum of understanding for research and development in the field of lightning protection and grounding.
The Research & Design Institute Molniya (Lightning) is one of the most renowned satellite institutions of the National Technical University. The institute was formed to provide solutions to the most important nationwide problems in the field of high voltage electro-physics and engineering. Today the institute is both a school and a powerful scientific organization with a unique experimental base, which carries out fundamental and applied research in the development and creation of unique high-voltage devices for scientific and technical purposes.
The institute employs 200 highly qualified staff members, among them five doctors of technical sciences and ten PhDs. The scientific collaborators of the institute published five manuscripts, more than 1000 papers, and obtained more than 500 patents and innovation authorship certificates. In 2001 the experimental units of the institute were entered into the International Test Equipment Register (IEC 61000-4-32).
Together Alltec Corporation and the National Technical University, “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute,” will be researching and developing methods to increase the effectiveness of current technologies as well as establishing experimental methods to test and develop a new generation of products.
We look forward for a long-term and mutually beneficial relationship, while discovering a whole spectrum of facts regarding lightning and its adverse effects on people and third generation electronics.
