Lightning season has come again! Lightning is a spectacular natural phenomenon, but it's extremely dangerous. There are about 2,000 people killed worldwide by lightning each year. At the same time, hundreds more injured by lightning suffer from a variety of life-long health problems, including memory loss, dizziness, weakness, numbness, and other life-altering illnesses. Damage caused by a single lightning strike can affect thousands of people; in addition, it also causes more commercial/residential property damages than any other weather related event. An article on a major US Insurance website states, "The average claim for lightning-related damage is well over $10,000." Thus lightning damage can be costly, and it could be a life changing event. To avoid becoming a lightning victim, it’s very important that you understand the dangers of lightning.
There are many great resources on the internet which help you learn about lightning and lightning safety tips. Why don't you review the fundamentals of lightning safety today?

Alltec Corporation is proud to announce that its President/CEO, Christopher Bean has been invited to present at the IECEP (International Electronics Conference & Expo Philippines) on November 5, 2011 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, Philippines. He will share concepts regarding how to protect structures from lightning strikes; and how to bolster the immunity levels of today’s sophisticated electronic equipment from lightning related damage. His discussion will focus on the importance of protection, what needs to be protected, methods of protection, and what latest protection technologies are available as well as applications.
In the Philippines, thunderstorm activity has been observed to be increasing in recent years. Its geographical location and physical environment routinely exposes it to the problems associated with tropical weather; including cyclones, extreme rainfall, typhoons, thunderstorms, and lightning activities. Statistics show that every year, over 6,000 thunderstorms occur in the country. It is an unfavorable fact that lightning related hazards bring chaos to life and property, and disturb the lives of millions of citizens. Moreover, on the assumption that the theory of global warming is true, we could see double or triple, even more, in the number of lightning strikes by mid-century.
Whether small or large, Businesses suffer massive annual financial losses resulting from lightning related property and equipment damages. Computer and communications equipment are especially vulnerable to lightning induced peril. Business owners and corporate managers invest a tremendous amount of time, money and resources to make their ventures successful; and yet, while the importance of emergency planning to minimize the adverse effects of natural disasters may be seem to be self-evident, planning and protecting against threatening lightning activity often gets put aside in the face of more immediate concerns.
The Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines-Pampanga Chapter (IECEP-Pampanga) was chosen as this year’s host of the 61st Mid-year Conference and General Membership Meeting. This year’s theme is “Electronics Engineers: Industry, Innovation and Ingenuity”. The announcement was made by IECEP National President Engr. Ornan Vicente, who stated that “This is a very timely theme as it captures the three basic ingredients every electronics engineers should possessed to survive and be successful in this challenging world of information age.”
• The audience consists primarily of engineers in the field of Electronics;
• Telecommunications-Information and Communications Technology (Hardware & Software Development; Networking; Content Development; Access Network Design; IS Providers; & Others); Biomedicine; Broadcasting; Cable TV; Semiconductor and Manufacturing; Instrumentation and Control; Avionics, Medical Electronics, etc.
• Owners/entrepreneurs of Small & Medium Enterprise of Info Tech (SMEIT); members of the Academe, Executives, Managers, and Supervisors from different industries are also expected to attend.
• There are six tracks: ICT; Electronics and Computing; Broadcast & Communications; Security & Defense; BICSI and Career Development.
• Around 500 – 700 delegates per track are expected.
The host, IECEP-Pampanga Chapter has lined-up exciting and worthwhile activities to give members a memorable stay in Pampanga. Highlights of the program are the technology show and exhibits, opening ceremony with prominent local officials of the province, interesting and new seminar topics, grand raffle promo, launching of IECEP-Pampanga websites, fellowship nights and group activities. Tampa, Florida isn’t just for tourism anymore. In fact, The Tampa Bay Area is the second largest metropolitan area in the state of Florida and the third largest metropolitan area in the Southeastern United States. This year Alltec Corporation will be exhibiting at the Florida Building and Facility Maintenance Show April 29th and 30th of this year, & we hope that you will join us. Alltec Corporation will address the issues of grounding, power quality, and lightning protection with the Alltec Protection Pyramid™, and meet with qualified building industry decision makers with issues of equipment downtime. Building owners, chief engineers, project managers, materials managers, electrical engineers and many other professionals involved in building and facility management will attend this year’s exhibition. Many of these industry experts have personal experience with equipment downtime caused by grounding issues, surges, and lightning.
Alltec Corporation’s newly launched Alltec Protection Pyramid™ provides a three-tiered comprehensive facility protection approach for grounding solutions, surge suppression, lightning protection. The system begins with the installation of a code compliant, single-point, low impedance/low resistivity grounding system sized to carry the full amplitude of a short circuit current safely to the ground. Next, surge protection devices are staged to dramatically filter the voltage, current, and frequency surges. Lastly, a well designed lightning protection system is created to protect against direct lightning strikes.
The three-tiered Alltec Protection Pyramid™ begins with the installation of a stable, low resistance and low impedance grounding system to bond all electrically conductive surfaces together. This redirect lightning energy safely to earth and away from power, telephone lines or data equipment with the following products: TerraDyne® Electrolytic Grounding System, TerraFill® Ground Enhancement Material, TerraBar® Bus Bar Series, and TerraWeld® Exothermic Welding System.
The second stage of protection comes from properly installed surge protection devices or SPD system, which reduces the magnitude of random, high energy, short duration electrical power anomalies. These occurrences are typically caused by atmospheric phenomena (such as lightning strikes), utility switching, inductive loads, and more internally generated transient voltages. In response to this demand, Alltec offers: PowerTrip® line of Surge Suppression Products.
Finally, a well-designed customized lightning protection system will be installed to safeguard facilities from direct lightning strikes. Traditional lightning protection methods as well as some of the most advanced technologies are available at Alltec Corporation: TerraStat® Charge Dissipation Terminals and TerraStreamer® Early Streamer Emission Terminals.
