TerraFill®
Low-Resistivity Grounding Backfil
TerraFill® is an easily applied low-resistivity grounding
backfill product which produces lower steady state and stable grounding
impedance. It produces lower surge impedance resulting in faster transient
dissipation. Manufactured from environmentally safe and stable products,
TerraFill® has an excellent shelf life and long term storage
has no performance effects.
TerraFill® creates a reliable, low resistance, electrical connection between the grounding system and the earth. It is manufactured to be compatible with copper grounding systems and standard field application methods. It can be used in connection with grounding grids to minimize step and touch potentials. In high resistivity soils, TerraFill® backfill can be used to produce acceptable grounding impedance within a reasonable sized area.
The versatility and ease of applying TerraFill® backfill to lower ground resistance of grounding equipment allows for a variety of earthing designs to be used which would otherwise be impractical. It requires only minimal instruction for application. TerraFill® backfill is self compacting , comes in easily transportable 50 lb (22.68 kg) bags, and can be easily installed by a single person.
TerraFill® Horizontal Installation (Trench)
TerraFill® Low-Resistivity Grounding Backfill Horizontail Installation
Application
- Auger a 7.6cm (3 inch) or
larger
diameter hole to a depth of 15.0cm (6inches) less than the
length of the ground rod. - Place ground rod into augured hole and drive it using the steel head and hammer approx 30 cms (one foot) into bottom of the hole. The top of the ground rod will be approximately 15.2cm (6 inches below the level of the grade. At this time, make any connections to ground rod.
- Pour the appropriate amount of TerraFill® backfill around the ground rod.
- Fill remainder of hole with soil removed during auguring and compact firmly.

TerraFill® Vertical Installation (Hole)
TerraFill® Low-Resistivity Grounding Backfill Hole Installation
Application
Dig a trench at least 10.2 cm (4 inches) wide x 76.2 cm
(30 inches) deep or below the frost line, whichever is
deeper. Spread out enough TerraFill® to uniformly cover
bottom of trench--about 2.5cm (1 inch) deep.- Place copper conductor/tape on top of TerraFill® backfill .
- Spread another 3 cm (1 inch) deep layer of TerraFill® backfill around and on top of the conductor so as to completely cover conductor.
- Cover the TerraFill® backfillwith soil to a depth of about 10 cm (4 inches), making sure not to expose the conductor. Fill in trench and compact soil firmly.
